As noted therein, the electrode material of the invention contains at least about 0.3% sulfur by weight, but no more than about 3.0% sulfur by weight. 5,763,959 discloses a particular choice of sulfur-containing, alkali metal-containing positive electrode material. 5,880,402 discloses an electrochemical cell comprising a metal current collector, a sulfur-containing metal-sulfide-containing negative active material, a pore forming agent, a polysulfide electrolyte, and a current-conducting filler material. 5,569,476 discloses a cell comprising a porous negative electrode containing an amorphous carbon material and a pore-forming agent and a porous positive electrode containing a metallic alkali. Batteries using a resistive material as the negative electrode are also shown in U.S. Ham, et al., “Sodium/Sulfur Batteries: Power Sources for Future”, Proceedings of the First International Symposium on Sodium Batteries, Padova, Italy, June 1995. For example, it has been suggested to coat the negative electrode with a resistive material such as lead or lead dioxide.
